About I consider myself a semi-professional photographer. But, what does that mean? Photography, for me, is a serious hobby that supports itself financially in the sense that I earn enough of an income through photography to at least buy my equipment. While my photography could potentially provide more of an income for myself, I'm not very interested in making it my career. In the real world, I'm a doctoral student in mathematics at The University of Colorado. My first serious camera was a Pentax ME-Super, a 20+ year-old manual SLR that I received in 2000 as a gift from a friend. Since, I have used 4 other cameras, each increasing in its technological complexity. Still, each camera I've owned, even my current professional digital SLR, is best operated with the experience of a basic, manual-focus, manual-aperture, old-fashioned camera.
Open-Source Photography Photography is an expensive hobby. After buying the cameras, tripods, filters, lenses and memory cards, today's digital darkroom can be another huge expense. But, it doesn't have to be that way. In recent years, I have migrated my digital darkroom to a free and open-source based system. I currently use the following software: - Operating System: Ubuntu Linux
I rent a web server for this website. It runs the following software, all available freely: - Operating System: Debian Linux
In addition, I charge my camera batteries with a SunLinq 6.5 Watt portable solar panel.
Equipment My current camera is a Pentax K10D digital SLR. My lenses are: - SMC Pentax 50mm, f1.7
Publications and Showings - Pentax Photo Gallery, 01/08 - Forest in Raindrop
